The Pavilion of Open Doors

The Pavilion of Open Doors, designed by Shray Tripathi and Anishwar Tirupur, was created for the 2022 Spring Carnival as the Entryway Pavilion, a historic tradition at Carnegie Mellon, whose fabrication was completed by NOMAS (the C.M.U Chapter of the National Organisation of Minority Architecture Students). The design centered around communal acts of making, engaging and reflecting the diverse community of NOMAS and the university, involving a large team including undergraduate and graduate students. The design included a modular assembly that was stacked and fastened strategically, allowing the prefabrication to be split into various simultaneous stages. The intent behind the modules was to use 2X4s minimally to allow for their reuse in normal construction, which made proper disassembly crucial. As a part of the NOMAS fabrication (assembly and disassembly) team, I was able to partake in the process of the initial fieldwork and establishing construction processes that would engage people who had never worked on something like this before, at that scale. While the design process was conducted over the span of a few months, the pre-fabrication and the assembly phase was completed within the matter of a few weeks, with the entire disassembly completed in less than a week. The pace of the fabrication fostered a very flexible workflow which was very rewarding.
