Internship Work Sample
Satu Pavilion, a temporary pop-up store for a textile brand based in Northern Thailand was a relatively short term project, proposing a commercial space within an existing pavilion in a market for a few months. The textile brand, Satu, works with women of marginalized communities to create employment and to keep the craft of backstrap looming alive. The founder stressed the importance of the store reflecting the vernacular architecture of the Hmong people which gave me the opportunity to research and come up with ways to incorporate the traditional designs within the existing pavilion that we are building inside. As the only designer working on the project right from the conceptual phase, I got to mess around with ideas and make models to pitch to the whole office; work through research, sketches, models, and focus groups. The next few spread demonstrate my working process through sketching and model making, including a modular panel system abstracting the craft of backstrap looming that could be manipulated to fit several different functions in the pavilion.
