Independent Project
Named after the Marathi word for “jute,” this table was an independent project completed over the course of a semester, aiming to explore the different ways of incorporating materials new to me in ways that would survive the test of time. As most of my independent projects, this started off by materials found in the scrap pile in the wood shop, largely determining the size and shape of the piece of furniture. Catered to the needs of the room that it occupies, the table was deisgned around its future surroundings; low furniture like a platform bed, wall paint, etc. The table’s shape took on several forms during the process of its build, accommodating for errors and newfound scrap material that would incorpoate well with the material pallet established.
The joinery of the table was explored extenstively; with its length almost thrice its height, a ply back glued using biscuits for sheer support was then put in and further concealed with the jute frame. The combination of birch ply and jatoba made the joinery interesting, with their contrast allowing for playful composition. Having never worked with textile before, and needing to stretch a material like jute for lasting tautness, further developing a way to attach a jute panel to a jatoba frame was definitely an enjoyable design challenge. The process of finding creative solutions to problems with my peers was definitely a rewarding experience.
